What is Sodium Persulphate?
With the chemical formula Na2S2O8, sodium persulphate is an inorganic compound and the sodium salt of peroxydisulphuric acid. Appearing as a white solid, it dissolves in water, is non-hygroscopic and has a good shelf life.
Also known as peroxodisulphate, this compound is an irritant to the eyes and may be toxic by skin absorption. This salt is typically synthesised via oxidation of sodium hydrogen sulphate.
How is Peroxodisulfate Used?
The common applications for this chemical compound include:
- Curing of formaldehyde-based adhesives
- As a radical initiator in polymerisation reactions
- In standalone bleach as well as hair cosmetic bleach
- As an ingredient in detergents
- As a replacement for ammonium persulphate in the etching of printed circuit boards
- In the pickling of several different metals, including copper
