About Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate

With the formula NaHCO3, sodium hydrogen carbonate is also called sodium bicarbonate. In terms of appearance, this compound forms a white solid, which can be crystalline or fine powder and has a slightly salty taste, similar to sodium carbonate. This compound has long been used in a variety of applications, and as such, it can go by many different names: bread soda, baking soda or bicarbonate of soda.

How Is Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate Produced?

Nowadays, this compound is mainly synthesised via the Solvay process, involving a reaction with ammonia, sodium chloride and carbon dioxide. Typically, calcium carbonate is the source of CO2, and the by-product of this reaction – calcium oxide – is used to recover unused ammonia.

This compound can also be produced based on a reaction between carbon dioxide and sodium hydroxide. The first reaction generates sodium carbonate, but continuous addition of carbon dioxide will eventually result in the synthesis of sodium hydrogen carbonate, which precipitates out of the reaction.

CO2 2 NaOH → Na2CO3 H2O Na2CO3 CO2 H2O → 2 NaHCO3

A third option involves mining for soda ash, in the form of the ore trona. This ore is dissolved in water and subsequently treated with carbon dioxide, resulting in precipitate sodium hydrogen carbonate.

Na2CO3 CO2 H2O → 2 NaHCO3

Sodium hydrogen carbonate can also be found naturally in deposits called nahcolite. These deposits can be mined using hot water to break through the nahcolite beds, which are then reconstituted via a natural re-crystallization process.
