Is Silver Nitrate Safe?

Silver nitrate has several medical uses, but all with extremely low concentrations, as this compound can be highly toxic in high concentrations. Short term exposure can result in dark stains on the skin, which can become burns after prolonged exposure. Silver nitrate is also an irritant to the eyes and may cause permanent damage.

If silver nitrate is inhaled or ingested, a condition called argyria may develop. This condition is characterised by blue-black patches on the skin and internal organs. However, this does not seem to disrupt the function of affected organs. Other symptoms include bronchitis and respiratory problems and even death after exposure to large amounts. To avoid exposure, staff must wear protective clothing and gloves and even a self-contained breathing apparatus if working in a poorly ventilated area.

Silver nitrate is not flammable, but if large amounts are involved in a fire it may cause an explosion. In addition, this compound is able to produce explosive compounds if mixed with ammonia, sulphur and alcohols. In case of fire, never use dry chemical, CO2 or Halon fire extinguishers, but simply flood the area from as far away as possible.

In terms of storage, this compound needs to be stored in a cool dark place, away from any sources of ignition. Also, as an oxidiser, it must be stored away from combustible materials and incompatible compounds, including arsenites, bromides, carbonates, iodides, phosphates, chlorides and others. In case of spillages, silver nitrate can be absorbed with sand or vermiculite. For large spillages, it’s possible to add sulphide solution and then neutralise with sodium bicarbonate or just lime.
