How is Phosphoric Acid Made?
Industrially, this compound can be synthesised via two different routes: the wet method and the thermal method. The wet method is more frequently used in the commercial sector, while the more expensive thermal method is preferred by the food industry, as it produces a purer compound.
This method involves a reaction between sulphuric acid and tricalcium phosphate, as follows:
Ca5(PO4)3X 5 H2SO4 10 H2O → 3 H3PO4 5 CaSO4·2 H2O HX (X = OH, F, Cl or Br)
From this initial reaction, the solution obtained contains about 30% phosphoric acid, which can be further evaporated to increase concentration. The reaction also produces calcium sulphate (CaSO4), which precipitates and can be removed by filtration.
As an alternative to sulphuric acid, this reaction can be done with nitric acid. In this case, it’s known as the nitrophosphate process, with the advantage that it also produces calcium nitrate, used as a plant fertiliser.
For the food industry, the grade of phosphoric acid is required to be much higher. For this reason, this industry needs to use phosphoric acid synthesise via the thermal method.
In this case, this compound is obtained from elemental phosphorus, which is burnt to phosphorus pentoxide and subsequently dissolved in phosphoric acid.
This method produces a very pure compound as most impurities were removed when extracting phosphorus from the rock at high temperatures.
