Methanol’s Toxicity: What Happens in the Human Body?

Unlike ethanol, even as little as 10ml of pure methanol can be highly toxic if ingested and 30 ml can be fatal. This alcohol is dangerous in two different ways: by its direct action on the central nervous system and after conversion to formic acid. Initially, after ingestion, inhalation or absorption through the skin, methanol has a depressant effect on the nervous system similar to ethanol poisoning, but with more permanent consequences.

A few hours after the initial exposure, methanol is then converted to formic acid in the liver. This mechanism involves a two-step reaction:

  • Step 1: Conversion of methanol to formaldehyde by alcohol dehydrogenase
  • Step 2: Conversion of formaldehyde to formic acid by aldehyde dehydrogenase

Formic acid can cause metabolic acidosis as well as disrupt cellular metabolism, leading to a variety of metabolic conditions. Treatment involves administering ethanol or fomepizole, which limit enzyme action, so that methanol can be excreted before being converted to formic acid.

What Are the Symptoms of Methanol Intoxication?

Initial symptoms include (direct impact on the central nervous system):

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Lack of coordination
  • Confusion
  • Unconsciousness and death after exposure to large amounts

Secondary symptoms (from conversion to formic acid, developing about 10 to 30 hours after exposure)

  • Blurred or complete loss of vision
  • Dilated pupils and retinal oedema
  • Acidosis
  • Respiratory failure

What is Methanol?

Also known as methyl alcohol, wood alcohol or methyl hydrate, methanol is the simplest alcohol with the formula CH3OH. Historically, it was obtained from the distillation of wood but nowadays is synthesised directly from hydrogen, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

This colourless and highly flammable solution has a distinct smell of alcohol, similar to the ethanol present in alcoholic beverages. However, while ethanol can be metabolised and excreted safely by the body, methanol is extremely toxic and unfit for consumption.

Industrially, this compound has found many different applications and can be used in a number of ways, including:

  • As a component of antifreeze
  • As a solvent in a range of industries
  • As a key component in the production of biodiesal via transesterification
  • As a fuel additive or to fuel internal combustion engines
  • As a denaturant agent for ethanol

Safety Procedures

There are several concerns with this compound, including its flammability and toxicity if ingested. To avoid the risk, staff handling this chemical must be aware of safety procedures to follow:

  • Methanol should be stored away from any open flames or sources of ignition. In addition to this, it should be stored in an area with adequate ventilation to prevent any build-up in the air.
  • It should not be disposed of in the drainage system, but rather according to the appropriate waste regulations.
  • Storage containers must not be left open as this will result in the evaporation of the harmful contents.
  • This compound should be used in a well-ventilated area with a fume extraction system to remove any vapours from the working area.
  • Staff must be trained to deal with spillages or evacuation if necessary.
For more information, we advise that you download the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) from our website.
