What is Marble’s Reagent?
Marble’s reagent is a solution of copper sulphate (CuSO4) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) dissolved in water. A standard mixture contains 4g CuSO4 and 20ml HCl added to 20ml water. It forms a green solution, with a pungent acidic odour and a pH below 1.
Uses of Marble’s Reagent
Marble’s reagent is used as an etchant for various types of metal alloys. Etching is the process of applying a strong acid solution to “burn” areas in a metal surface to create a design.
There are many different etching solutions depending on the type of metal used. This is an ancient technique that is thought to have been developed in the 15th century.
When using this solution, the material being etched should be immersed or swabbed for five to 60 seconds.
Marble’s reagent is most appropriate for etching nickel (Ni), nickel and copper (Ni-Cu) or nickel and iron (Ni-Fe) alloys and superalloys. A few drops of sulphuric acid (H2SO4) can be added to increase activity.
Safety Measures When Using Marble’s Reagent
As a solution containing a strong acid, it is essential to follow important safety measures. All information available in the Material Safety Data Sheet which can be downloaded from our website.
Appropriate protective clothing should be worn at all times, including suitable respiratory equipment during spraying operations. Frequent change of gloves is advisable as the solution may seriously damage the gloves and cause skin burns.
