Dichloromethane’s volatility and solubility in a wide range of products make it a popular ingredient in many industrial processes. Common uses include:
Used in the process to decaffeinate coffee and tea
Used in the process to prepare extracts of hops and other flavourings
Aerosol spray propellant
Blowing agent in the manufacture of polyurethane foams
Plastic welding adhesive
Used to test bituminous materials to separate the aggregate from the binder, allowing for further testing of these materials
Dichloromethane can be found in nature, from volcanoes and wetlands, to algae and the ocean. Despite this ubiquitous presence, the vast majority of all dichloromethane is the result of industrial synthesis.
Methods of Synthesis
Dichloromethane can be synthesised by the reaction between chlorine gas and methane or chloromethane at high temperatures. At 500 degree Celsius, methane can be increasingly chlorinated in a series of reactions to produce chloromethane (CH3Cl), Dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) chloroform (CHCl3) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Once this process is completed, individual compounds can be separated by distillation.
CH4 Cl2 → CH3Cl HCl
CH3Cl Cl2 → CH2Cl2 HCl
CH2Cl2 Cl2 → CHCl3 HCl
CHCl3 Cl2 → CCl4 HCl

Also known as methylene chloride, dichloromethane is a colourless and volatile solution with a characteristic sweet aroma. Dichloromethane is commonly used as a solvent because, while it may not be miscible with water, it can be mixed with a variety of organic solvents.
Dichloromethane may not be as toxic as more complex chlorohydrocarbons, but its high volatility means it's not without its risks. Safe handling procedures must always be followed. Please refer to our MSDS sheet, which can be downloaded from our website.
Dangers of Dichloromethane
Dichloromethane is a toxic chemical. If ingested, or chronically inhaled, it is quickly metabolised into carbon monoxide. This can result in carbon monoxide poisoning and liver failure. Skin contact may also result in chemical burns as dichloromethane can dissolve fatty acids present in the skin. It has also been labelled a potential carcinogen, though there is limited evidence.
In many countries, products containing dichloromethane must carry a warning sign, indicating its dangers and that it can only be used by professionals. In Europe, for example, sale to DIYers was banned in December 2010 and now it can only be used by some professionals under specific conditions, ensuring appropriate ventilation conditions.
