Boric Acid Uses

Boric acid is an extremely versatile compound, which can be used in many different applications, from medical uses to lubricant. A few examples include:

  • Medical uses: This compound is commonly used as an antiseptic and antibacterial to treat acne, athlete’s feet or other skin conditions. Diluted solutions can also be used as an eye wash or to treat mild cases of ear infection.
  • Wood Preservation: Boric acid solutions are popular treatments for dry and wet rot in timber, as well as protection against fungal infections. This compound is also available in gel form or injectable paste to treat wood severely affected by rot, avoiding the need to replace. For wood used in marine environments, products containing high concentrations of boric acid can be used to prevent algae and slime growth.
  • Insecticide: Boric acid can be used to control many insects, from ants to cockroaches. It basically works as a poison, affecting the insect’s metabolism. In addition, in a dry powder form, boric acid can be very abrasive to the insect but still considered safe for household use.
  • Lubricant: Dissolved in oil or petroleum, boric acid forms a colloidal suspension, with remarkable lubricant properties for metal surfaces.
  • pH buffer in swimming pools: Boric acid is a weak acid widely used to regulate the pH in swimming pools.

About Boric Acid

As the name suggests, this compound is a weak acid of boron with the formula H3BO3. Also known as boracic acid or hydrogen borate, boric acid appears in the form of colourless crystals or a white powder that easily dissolves in water.

Boric acid has a wide range of uses across many different industries. It is used:

  • As an insecticide for the control of ants, cockroaches, termites, fleas, etc
  • In the manufacture of flame retardants
  • In the manufacture of textile fibreglass used to reinforce plastics
  • With silicone oil to manufacture silly putty
  • As an antiseptic for minor burns
  • As a preservative for wood, timber and cattle hides
  • As a pH buffer in swimming pools
  • As a neutron poison in nuclear power plants

Natural Occurrence

In natural condition, boric acid is a component of a mineral called sassolite. This occurs near volcanoes in places like Tuscany, Italy, the Lipari Islands and Nevada.

It is also found mixed with other compounds in boracite, boronatrocaicite or colemanite. Boric acid can also be found as a predominant salt in salt water.

Boric acid can be synthesised by two main processes:

  1. Via a reaction between sodium tetraborate decahydrate (Na2B4O7·10H2O, also known as borax) and hydrochloric acid (HCl):Na2B4O7·10H2O + 2 HCl → 4 H3BO3 + 2 NaCl + 5 H2O
  2. As a by-product of hydrolysis of diborane (B2H6) or boron trihalides (BX3, where X can be Bromium, Iodine or Chloride):B2H6 + 6 H2O → 6H2 + 2B(OH)3BX3 + 3 H2O → 3HX + B(OH)3
