Chemical and Physical Properties of Ammonium Thiocyanate

With the formula NH4SCN, ammonium thiocyanate forms colourless and odourless hygroscopic crystals, which are highly corrosive to brass, copper and iron. This compound is very soluble in water, acetone and ethanol but insoluble in chloroform and ethyl acetate. It can be referred to as ammonium rhodanide or ammonium rhodanate.

This compound can be considered a weak acid, reacting with caustic soda (NAOH) or caustic potash (KOH) to generate sodium thiocyanate or potassium thiocyanate, respectively. It also reacts easily with ferric salts to produce ferric thiocyanate, with a characteristically deep-red colouration.

How Ammonium Thiocyanate is Made

Ammonium thiocyanate is usually prepared through a reaction between carbon disulfide (CS2) and ammonia (NH3), forming intermediary ammonium dithiocarbamate (NH2(=S)SNH4). Subsequently subjected to high temperatures, this intermediary is converted to ammonium thiocyanate and hydrogen sulphide (H2S).

CS2 2NH3 → NH2C(=S)SNH4 → NH4SCN H2S

Uses and Applications of Ammonium Thiocyanate

Ammonium thiocyanate can be used in a variety of applications, including:

  • synthesis of herbicides
  • production of artificial resins
  • matches
  • stabilising agent in photography
  • ingredient in rustproofing products
  • textiles
  • dyes and prints
  • titrimetric analyses
  • colourimetric analyses (to determine levels of iron present in samples)

Complex preparation

Also known as Ammonium rhodanid or Ammonium rhodanate, ammonium thiocyanate has the chemical formula CH4N2S. It forms colourless and odourless hygroscopic crystals, which are very soluble in water, ethanol and acetone but insoluble in chloroform. It’s prepared by mixing carbon disulphide (CS2) and aqueous ammonia (NH3), forming ammonium dithiocarbamate (NH2C(=S)SNH4), which decomposes to ammonium thiocyanate and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) after heating. An alternative method of synthesis involves boiling a solution of ammonium cyanide in the presence of sulphur. Identification of ammonium thiocyanate in solution is done by precipitation as silver thuiocyanate in the presence of silver nitrate. Alternatively, by addition of ferric salt, a red colouration appears after production of ferric thiocyanante.

Although not flammable, it produces poisonous gases in fire, including ammonia, nitric oxides, sulphur oxides, and hydrogen cyanide. Inhalation of dust may cause irritation of eyes and throat, so protective clothing, including gloves and googles, must be worn. Full details about safety procedures can be found on the Material Safety Data Sheet available to download online.

Uses from herbicides to photography

Ammonium thiocyanate has many different applications, including:
  • Herbicides

  • Matches
  • Photography (stabilising agent)
  • Rustproofing products
  • Adjuvant in textile printing and dyeing
  • Titrimetric analysis
  • Used to determine the iron content in drinks
  • Used in the separation of hafnium from zirconium
